Skal Biocontrole is the independent organization that monitors the organic chain in the Netherlands. We are dedicated to proving the reliability of the organic sector through registration, certification, and monitoring.
Skal Biocontrole ensures that your business' organic production, processing, or trading activities complies with the EU organic regulation, the Dutch Landbouwkwaliteitswet (LKW, Agricultural Quality Act), and the regulations and principles of Skal Biocontrole.
This is done by Skal on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. By visiting and inspecting the companies every year, Skal monitors the entire Dutch organic sector. In doing so, the organization ensures that a verifiable and reliable European organic quality label is used.
Skal Biocontrole is the official body where companies can become certified as organic. Businesses wanting to become certified must complete a number of steps:
Skal is a non-departmental public body. This type of public body carries out a government task and holds a special position within the Government of the Netherlands. As a non-departmental public body under private law, Skal is subject to the Non-Departmental Public Bodies Framework Act.
The Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality has appointed the Skal Biocontrole Foundation as the supervisory authority for implementing these statutory tasks that arise from the European regulations on organic production. The European regulation allows member states to decide on how to structure their monitoring system. The Netherlands has chosen an unambiguous structure: one supervisory authority that is responsible for all statutory control tasks within organic production.
